Working extensively with multi-disciplinary professionals, stakeholders, users, and all in a team-driven environment, Tyson Gillard is a progressive leader, entrepreneur and architect. He is the founder and former CEO of Outdoor Project, and has been an architect, lead designer and project lead for and with numerous architectural and engineering firms including CH2MHILL/IDC Architects (now Jacobs) and ZGF Architects in Portland, Oregon.
Tyson’s interest in the technically demanding and desire for pushing boundaries has led to the development of a portfolio and business experience ranging from site planning and grandiose industrial facilities design, to product development, strategic energy use consulting, digital media operations, sales, and executive management. With a strong dedication to environmental stewardship and revolutionary energy thinking he continuously engages in design innovation, formulating his life mission: to constantly question how humans might more intelligently inhabit this planet, and live in sustainable synergy with the natural environment.
Clients served include Microsoft, Intel, OHSU, Trimet, City of Portland, Visit California, Travel Oregon, Danner Boots, Chaco, Tito's Handmade Vodka and many more.
Most recently, Tyson embarked on his largest career endeavor. Harnessing his design and business acumen, Tyson took his life’s mission to the internet… founding and running Outdoor Project, a digital media company that’s main goal is to inspire and facilitate human interaction with the natural world. As CEO, Tyson created and led a team of 11 employees, 20+ contractors, 300+ contributors, and 365,000+ members to create the fastest growing website in the U.S. for outdoor recreation and adventure travel with over 1 million unique monthly visitors, and a monthly social reach of 12 million. Most notably, Outdoor Project continues to garner the most engaged audience among all of its media competitors, and maintains the only audience in the space that is majority female.

Tyson Gillard became a licensed architect in 2012, has completed architectural undergraduate studies at the University of Oregon in Portland and Eugene as well as at the Universität Stuttgart in Germany, and further studied in Dresden, Germany. He resides with his family in Portland, Oregon.
